STN-LCD, the full name of which is Super Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display, is a super twisted nematic liquid crystal display.
It is a type of screen based on liquid crystal display technology, with unique display characteristics and a wide range of applications.
Meaning
STN-LCD realizes image display through the super twisted arrangement of liquid crystal molecules. Compared with TN-LCD (twisted nematic liquid crystal display), the liquid crystal molecules of STN-LCD can produce a larger twist angle (usually 180 degrees to 270 degrees) under the action of an electric field, which makes STN-LCD show better performance in terms of contrast and viewing angle width. The imaging principle of STN-LCD is to place the liquid crystal material between two transparent conductive glasses attached to the optical axis perpendicular polarizing plates, and the liquid crystal molecules will rotate and arrange in sequence according to the direction of the fine grooves of the alignment film. By controlling the voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer, the arrangement state of the liquid crystal molecules can be changed, thereby controlling the passage and blocking of light and realizing the display of images.
Features and Applications
1. High contrast and wide viewing angle: Due to the super-twisted arrangement of liquid crystal molecules, STN-LCD can provide higher contrast and wider viewing angle, so that the image can maintain a good display effect at different angles.
2. Diversified display modes: STN-LCD supports multiple display modes, including monochrome display, pseudo-color display and full-color display, which can meet the needs of different application scenarios.
3. Low power consumption: STN-LCD is a passive matrix LCD device with relatively low power consumption, which helps to extend the battery life of the device.
4. Wide application: STN-LCD is widely used in various electronic devices due to its low cost and stable performance, such as early mobile phones, game consoles, electronic watches, calculators, instruments and meters. In addition, STN-LCD also plays an important role in some occasions where the display effect is not particularly high, such as car displays, industrial control equipment, etc.
It should be noted that with the continuous development of display technology, more advanced display technologies such as TFT-LCD (thin film transistor liquid crystal display) have gradually replaced the application of STN-LCD in high-end electronic products. However, in some cost-sensitive or specific demand occasions, STN-LCD still has certain market advantages.
