DSTN-LCD, full name Dual Scan Tortuosity Nomograph Liquid Crystal Display, is a dual-scan twisted array liquid crystal display.

It is a liquid crystal display technology developed from super twisted nematic display (STN).

Definition

DSTN-LCD scans the twisted nematic liquid crystal display screen through dual scanning to achieve the purpose of display. It uses the twisted arrangement and electro-optical effect of liquid crystal molecules to change the arrangement state of liquid crystal molecules under the action of electric field, thereby controlling the passage and blocking of light to achieve image display. Because DSTN uses dual scanning technology, its display effect is greatly improved compared with STN.

Features

1. Dual scanning technology: DSTN-LCD uses dual scanning to divide the screen into upper and lower parts for simultaneous scanning, which increases the refresh rate and duty cycle, thereby improving the display effect.

2. Improved display effect: Compared with STN-LCD, DSTN-LCD has improved contrast, brightness and color performance, although it is still not comparable to more advanced display technologies such as TFT-LCD.

3. Pseudo-color display: DSTN-LCD is not a true color display. It can only display a certain color depth and is often called "pseudo-color display" because it cannot independently control the brightness and contrast of each pixel like a true color display.

4. Cost-effectiveness: DSTN-LCD has a relatively simple structure and low manufacturing cost, so it still has a certain market in some cost-sensitive application scenarios.

Application

DSTN-LCD has been widely used in early electronic products such as laptops, electronic dictionaries, game consoles, and handheld devices. However, with the continuous advancement of display technology and the improvement of consumer requirements for display effects, DSTN-LCD has gradually been replaced by more advanced display technologies. At present, it is mainly used as a display screen in some low-end or specific demand devices.

In general, DSTN-LCD is a liquid crystal display technology with specific historical significance and technical characteristics. It has played an important role in the development of liquid crystal display technology, but it is no longer a mainstream display technology.

The dual-scanning technology of DSTN-LCD (Dual-Layer Super Twist Nematic-LCD) is one of its notable features.

This technology uses dual scanning to scan the twisted nematic LCD screen, that is, the screen is divided into two parts, the upper and lower parts, and the CPU refreshes the two parts in parallel, thereby increasing the duty cycle and improving the display effect.

Due to the use of dual scanning, the refresh rate of DSTN-LCD is twice as fast as that of single scanning (such as STN-LCD), making the image display smoother.

However, DSTN-LCD is not a true color display, and its color depth and display effect are limited. It is generally only suitable for text, tables and static image processing, and is now rarely used in display devices such as laptops.

The main material used in dual-scan twisted array liquid crystal display (DSTN-LCD) is liquid crystal (LC for short). Liquid crystal is a special substance between solid and liquid, with unique optical, electrical and thermal properties. In DSTN-LCD, liquid crystal molecules are arranged into a specific twisted array, and the display effect is improved by dual scanning technology.

Specifically, the structure of DSTN-LCD includes two glass substrates with a liquid crystal layer in the middle, and polarizers and transparent electrodes are provided on both sides of the liquid crystal layer. When current passes through the transparent electrode, the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules changes, thereby changing the transmittance of light and forming an image. The dual scanning technology divides the screen into two parts, upper and lower, and the CPU refreshes these two parts in parallel to improve the display effect.

In addition, DSTN-LCD may also use other auxiliary materials, such as backlight panels, reflective films, etc., to provide uniform background light sources and enhance display effects.

However, compared with the more advanced TFT-LCD, DSTN-LCD has obvious deficiencies in color saturation, viewing angle and response speed, and is now less used in high-end display devices.
