Will OLED or mini-LED dominate the future?

OLED is a panel technology, while miniLED is a backlight technology. MiniLED essentially uses an LCD panel, improving display quality by optimizing traditional backlighting technology.

The optimization method of miniLED is quite interesting: it divides a large screen into as many units as possible, each with its own independently controlled backlight. The more backlight zones, the higher the contrast ratio and the more detailed the display. ▲

Then the question arises:

Can a large screen be infinitely divided?

In other words:

What is the limit to the number of backlight zones in miniLED?

The answer is the number of pixels—because a pixel is the smallest unit of a panel.

The biggest advantage of OLED panels is that each pixel is self-emissive.

LCD TVs use miniLED backlighting to make their display quality (contrast ratio) approach that of OLED.

Therefore, in terms of contrast ratio alone, the upper limit of miniLED development is the inherent lower limit of OLED. ▲

So the question then arises: If OLED is so powerful, why hasn't it achieved its goal of dominating the display field after so many years?

In fact, this has already been achieved in the small-screen market:

Currently, no flagship mobile phone brand on the market doesn't use an OLED screen;

Flagship laptop models typically also use OLED screens;

High-end monitors are often OLED screens as well.

The only sector not yet "dominated" by OLED is probably the home television market. The reason is simple: there's a clear trend towards larger screens in the home television market, and OLED panels are too expensive, while the yield rate for large-screen production is too low.

Of course, on the other hand, miniLED has indeed performed admirably, improving significantly in the past two years, with costs decreasing dramatically. It achieves about 90% of the display effect of OLED at less than 1/3 the price.

Therefore, at this stage, miniLED still possesses irreplaceable advantages. And in the foreseeable future, miniLED will continue to shine for a long time.

However, if we extend the time horizon sufficiently, there is no doubt that OLED is the true future (or perhaps Micro-LED, but definitely not MiniLED).

However, the distant future is meaningless to ordinary people; are they really going to wait ten or eight years to buy a TV?

Furthermore, current OLED technology has several drawbacks: for example, rapid aging and low overall brightness. These are precisely the advantages of miniLED—moreover, display quality isn't just about contrast ratio alone.

In conclusion:

If your budget allows, you can buy an OLED TV without hesitation; it still has irreplaceable advantages over miniLED. But if you hesitate even for a moment, then decisively buy a miniLED TV—it's excellent value!
